UPDATE: Wednesday's surgery went well for Ling. However, doctors have discovered more damage during surgery and it is estimated Ling will remain in the hospital for up to four months with additional surgery slated in about 30 days. Thursday doctors started to bring her out of the medically induced coma, removed her breathing tube and reduced the amount of medications. Family and friends have set up two bank accounts for donations to help the Murray family cover medical costs.

The mother of the 2-year-old girl who was struck and killed by a car on Snyder Lane in Rohnert Park on Dec. 1, opened her eyes Sunday for the first time since the accident and remains in critical condition at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

The accident, which took the life of Calli Murray, occurred near the intersection of Snyder Lane and Medical Center Drive early Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m. Ling Murray, Calli’s 40-year-old mother, suffered multiple broken bones and other major injuries that will require several surgeries. Ling Murray had the first of her surgeries, on her left arm, Saturday.

On Monday, she had surgeries on her left knee and leg, and she also had pins placed in her pelvic area.

The driver of the car was identified as Kaitlyn Dunaway, an 18-year-old freshman volleyball player at Sonoma State University.

According to Rohnert Park Dept. of Public Safety officials, Dunaway was driving a 1997 Honda on Snyder Lane and failed to stop at the crosswalk. Ling and Calli Murray, according to public safety officials, were crossing Snyder Lane when Dunaway was driving from a southbound lane. The Murrays had been playing at the park when they began to return home and began walking, hand-in-hand, into the crosswalk, public safety officials said.

The group continued to grow, spilling out around a shrine of stuffed animals, flowers and candles placed below a sign for Sunrise Park near the Snyder Lane crosswalk where the crash occurred. Green police paint still lingered where police officers marked evidence from the crash.

A group of people braved rainy conditions Sunday evening to hold a candlelight vigil at the intersection where the collision occurred. Calli Murray would have turned 3 on Christmas Day.
